Congratulations
JOAN WATMOUGH for being selected Artist of the Month for January 2012
Joan, originally from New England, is retired from teaching and now she and her husband reside in North Port, FL. Upon moving to FL she discovered those LONG pine needles, but what to do with them? She learned they could be stitched into baskets, using raffia, waxed linen or sinew and a needle, using the ancient method of coiling, around and around, row upon row. She does many styles of pine needle basketry, often inserting pieces of her own pottery. Another discovery upon moving to FL was the GOURD. They come in many shapes and sizes and the decorating possibilities are endless. They can be painted, stained, wood burned, inserts added, chip carved, woven into and onto, made into fun or utilitarian objects. Joan calls herself a fiber artist and artisan who strives to create not only a functional container, but one that is unique and attractive, to be used carefully and displayed as a decorative item in the home. Joan is a member of the Venice Society of Basket Weavers, the American and Florida Gourd Societies and the Art Alliance of Lemon Bay where her work is displayed. To see more of Ellen’s paintings, cards, and one-of-a-kind “flapper” handbags, visit her booth at the Placida Saturday Market or her permanent display at the Arts Alliance of Lemon Bay, a Florida nonprofit corporation promoting charitable and educational endeavors. Located at 452 Dearborn St., the Arts Alliance is open Mon-Sat10am-5pm and Sun 11am-3pm. The Arts Alliance of Lemon Bay is privileged to present the works of Artist Lois Bartlett Tracy. The Tracy family has agreed to loan paintings to us for display at our Exhibiting Members Gallery. We are currently showing “The Transfiguration” a 40” x 52” Acrylic Enamel pour on canvas, from the Story of the Miracle Paintings. “These paintings are the result of a strange vision I experienced on a trip to Israel with a group headed by The Christian Retreat, while visiting the Upper Room Chamber. I feel I was a channel for their creation, and although I applied the paint and held the brushes, the final outcome was a surprise to me.” Lois Bartlett Tracy.
“The Transfiguration was planned to follow the Bible story of Elijah and Moses talking with Jesus on the mountaintop while three disciples pray in the garden below. |
|
I felt an urge to place newspaper over the entire painting and pour paint over it.. This time I used white paint, then, yellow. When the newspaper was removed three days later, my mountaintop figures had disappeared, and the disciples below were mostly hidden in the flow of golden light surrounding the white column of the Christ figure.”
Lois Bartlett Tracy was born on December 9, 1901 and died on April 8, 2008 at the age of 106. Hers is an artist's legacy. Her work hangs in some of the worlds finest art museums and most recently at Sarasota Arts Center opening Jan 17th. She left the world a more colorful, richer place.
